Title: Organizer: Refugee Mental Health Liaison
Employment Status: Half-time, exempt, permanent
Reports to: Associate Director of Refugee Services
PURPOSE:
MCC’s Refugee Mental Health Program is funded by the Office for Refugee Resettlement through one of our two our affiliated national agencies. This program is designed to increase community capacity to identify and connect refugees and asylees to mental health and therapeutic services. The Refugee Mental Health Liaison will play a key role in building the capacity of resettlement and mutual assistance agencies to appropriately serve clients who are from war-torn regions of the world. This is a two phased program whose goals are to: increase knowledge and resources of agencies to better connect clients to appropriate services earlier during their resettlement period, expand the network of resources that are available to refugees and asylees by building capacity and increasing knowledge of mainstream agencies, and to identify gaps and implement programming in other service areas that will benefit refugees and asylees.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and deliver informational materials to resettlement and service provider agencies on recognizing symptoms of trauma and identifying appropriate therapeutic referrals.
- Conduct outreach to mainstream service providers to increase their capacity to serve refugee clients.
- Develop and lead a Refugee Mental Health Working Group within the community.
- Develop a referral and/or network system that resettlement and mutual assistance agencies can utilize to fully access appropriate mental health services.
- Provide suggestions to program coordinators at MCC and/or other agencies on ways to improve programs so that mental health issues are effectively recognized and addressed.
- Provide consultation and recommendations on individual cases where mental health issues arise.
- Serve as an advocate to increase awareness of refugee mental health issues within MCC and the community.
- Research best practice approaches from the US and around the world on effectively addressing refugee mental health issues.
- Provide staff and community members with up-to-date research in the area of refugee mental health.
- Collect data and outcome measurements as appropriate, and develop regular reports and updates as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor degree required.
- LISW strongly preferred but will consider applicants with other relevant experience and qualifications.
- Extensive cross-cultural experience required. Candidate must be familiar with refugee and asylee populations and mental health issues related to resettlement, trauma and/or torture.
- At least 3 years prior professional experience working directly with refugees or recent immigrants, and experience working collaboratively with community service providers.
- Demonstrated strong cross-cultural communication, negotiation, and mediation skills.
- Ability to effectively bring key players to the table and to facilitate communication and concrete action around a common goal.
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing trainings/presentations.
- Program development and strong leadership experience, including ability to work creatively and adaptively.
- Working knowledge of the U.S. refugee resettlement program strongly desired.
- Proven proficiency using the following software programs: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, database applications (preferably FileMaker Pro).
- Driver’s license and access to a vehicle required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS:
Most job duties are performed during the weekday business hours. Occasional evening responsibilities will also be assigned. This position works out of MCC’s office at 122 West Franklin Avenue, but frequent local travel is required.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary is dependent on experience and qualifications. Benefits include holidays, and accrued sick leave and vacation. Medical insurance is available and is pro-rated based on 0.5 time.
